Are electric toothbrushes actually a better choice than manual ones?
Surprisingly, even with all the advances in toothbrush technology, it is still the brushing technique that is considered the best at achieving results. With so many different types of toothbrushes available it can be quite overwhelming deciding which is best: hard, soft, electric, manual, etc.
An electric toothbrush is beneficial when you don’t tend to brush your teeth for the full recommended two minutes. Having the extra power can add extra brushstrokes to your limited brushing time and help get every tooth by covering a larger area faster.
Electric toothbrushes are also beneficial for anyone who has trouble using their hands, such as those with arthritis. There are also specialised electric toothbrushes available for those with arthritis or who have difficulty using their hands.
It can also be a better option for children, as there are fun kids ones available that may help encourage them to brush their teeth. If they have braces as well, electric toothbrushes are great for brushing in and around the metal parts.
The only real disadvantage to an electric toothbrush is the cost. The replacement brushes and all of the parts only add more to the overall expense of the brush. It is however a case of choosing what helps you or your kids to best brush your teeth. A brilliant smile and healthy teeth are important, and if spending a bit extra on an electric toothbrush can help you achieve this, then the cost can only be considered worth it.
If you are unsure about your dental needs and if an electric toothbrush is the right choice for you or your kids, then make a note to ask your dentist at your next appointment.
