Special Considerations for Children's Dental Care: A Guide for Parents

Good dental hygiene is essential for children of all ages, but there are some special considerations for those with special needs. At NOVA Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our goal is to provide our patients with the same quality of care that their friends and classmates receive. We understand that special needs patients require specialized dental care and have adapted our techniques to ensure positive results. From sedation methods to improved communication and positive reinforcement, we do everything possible to help our clients with special needs receive the dental care they deserve.

Our dentists and orthodontists have completed additional training to care for patients with special needs. We consult with our patients' doctors to discuss medical histories and concerns when needed. We also take the time to make sure that our patients with special needs know our staff, technicians, and doctors to help them feel comfortable and safe. In most cases, we found that patients with special needs do very well during brief visits.

However, when a longer or more complicated procedure is required, sedation may be recommended. We offer a variety of sedation methods for our youngest clients, including nitrous oxide and conscious sedation. For older patients with special needs and children with high levels of anxiety, we often find that intravenous sedation is the best approach. Full sedation under the care of an anesthesiologist allows us to provide complete care without the patient feeling anxious or afraid during the procedure. We partner with a board-certified anesthesiologist who provides sedation services in our office, and in this way we have had great success treating patients with a variety of conditions. At NOVA Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we believe that preventive dental care is essential for children of all ages.

We recommend that parents clean their gums twice a day with a soft, clean cloth in the morning after the first meal and just before bed to eliminate the bacteria and sugars they can cause. We also suggest teaching your children good dental habits so they can maintain healthy teeth and gums in adulthood. In my spare time, I enjoy using my engineering experience to develop innovative dental treatment technologies through artificial intelligence and software programming. For children under 2 years old, talk to your doctor or dentist first about using fluoride toothpaste. At NOVA Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we understand that providing quality dental care for children with special needs requires specialized techniques and approaches. Our team of experienced dentists and orthodontists have completed additional training to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care.

We also offer a variety of sedation methods to help make procedures easier for our youngest clients. In addition, we recommend preventive dental care for all children to ensure healthy teeth and gums in adulthood.
